St. Croix Crucian Christmas Festival Videos

The Crucian Christmas Festival carries St. Croix from December into the New Year.

St. Croix's Crucian Christmas Festival opens in December and runs into January, closing with J'ouvert and the Adults' Parade through Frederiksted. Moko jumbies walk high above the crowd, quadrille and scratch bands keep the older sound alive, and the troupes bring feathers and soca. This is one of the carnivals MasLife World TV covers most closely.

What St. Croix Carnival is

The Crucian Christmas Festival is St. Croix's carnival, and it runs across the Christmas and New Year holidays rather than in the pre-Lenten season. The tradition goes back to the 1800s, when enslaved Africans on the island were given time off at Christmas and marked it in homemade costumes, dancing through the streets — the root of what is now a weeks-long festival organised through the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Tourism's Division of Festivals. The season is built around Frederiksted and Christiansted: a festival village with food booths, live calypso, soca and quelbe bands, pageants, a Food Fair and boat races, then the parades that most visitors come for — the Children's Parade followed by the Adults' Parade, with troupes, floats, moko jumbies on stilts, mocko jumbie masqueraders and steel and brass bands on the road. For anyone searching "St. Croix Carnival" or "Crucian Christmas Festival", this is that event. It is distinct from St. Thomas Carnival, which runs in the spring, and from the summer St. John Festival — the U.S. Virgin Islands holds a separate carnival on each island.

When it happens

The Crucian Christmas Festival runs from around the day after Christmas into the first days of January, with the Adults' Parade closing it in early January — the 2025-26 edition ran December 26, 2025 to January 3, 2026. That is the recurring pattern; the next edition's dates have not been confirmed here yet and are announced each year by the USVI Division of Festivals. The next date has not been confirmed yet.

Parade

The festival's parades run through Frederiksted, with the Children's Parade held before the Adults' Parade, which traditionally closes the festival in early January. Troupes and floats move behind steel, brass and quelbe bands, with moko jumbies on stilts among the traditional characters. Each season's parade dates and route are announced by the Division of Festivals.

Culture and history

The Crucian Christmas Festival is one of the oldest continuous carnival traditions in the Caribbean, dating to the 1800s. Enslaved Africans on St. Croix were given time off around Christmas and used it for masquerade — homemade costumes, drums and dancing through the streets — a practice that survived emancipation and grew into the island's formal festival. That origin still shapes the festival: quelbe, the Virgin Islands' scratch-band music, sits alongside calypso and soca; moko jumbies on stilts remain central to the parades; and the festival keeps its Christmas-to-New-Year calendar rather than moving to the pre-Lenten dates used in Trinidad.
