New York's Caribbean carnival runs over Labor Day weekend: J'ouvert in the dark through Brooklyn, then the West Indian American Day Parade down Eastern Parkway, one of the largest carnival parades anywhere. What New York Carnival is
New York Caribbean Carnival — the West Indian American Day Carnival on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn — is the largest Caribbean carnival in North America, drawing an estimated million people to the parade each Labor Day. It is run by the West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA) and unfolds over the Labor Day weekend: a run of shows and events including steel pan and soca nights, then J'ouvert in the pre-dawn hours of Labor Day itself, and the costumed parade along Eastern Parkway through the day. Bands representing Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Grenada, Barbados, Haiti, Guyana, Saint Lucia, Antigua and much of the wider Caribbean cross the Parkway in sections behind music trucks, while vendors line the route selling food from across the region. The Brooklyn carnival is a diaspora festival, not an island one: it is the New York expression of carnivals people carried with them from home, and for many Caribbean New Yorkers it is the biggest day of the year. For anyone searching "Labor Day parade Brooklyn", "West Indian Day Parade", "Eastern Parkway carnival" or "NYC J'ouvert", this is that event.

New York's J'ouvert takes place in the pre-dawn hours of Labor Day, before the daytime parade, and steel band music is its dominating sound as revellers chip through the streets. The City of New York publishes information on J'ouvert, including its history and the arrangements for each year, and start times and permitted routes have been adjusted by the City in recent years.

The Labor Day weekend carries a full programme of events around the parade, including steel pan and soca shows and promoter-run fetes across Brooklyn and Queens. WIADCA publishes its official events and registration listings for each season, and independent promoters publish their own.

Caribbean carnival in New York began in Harlem in the 1920s and 1930s as indoor costume balls held by Trinidadian immigrants, moved outdoors to a Harlem street parade, and was re-established in Brooklyn in the 1960s as Caribbean migration to Crown Heights and Flatbush grew. The West Indian American Day Carnival Association was formed to organise it, and the parade on Eastern Parkway has run annually since, becoming both a cultural institution and a significant political stage in the city. Its scale reflects the diversity of Caribbean New York: rather than one island's traditions, the Parkway carries mas, pan, soca, calypso, dancehall, kompa and chutney side by side, which is why the festival is described as pan-Caribbean rather than as a transplanted national carnival.

The parade route is on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn and is served by several subway lines; street closures and parking restrictions are extensive on Labor Day, so the subway is the usual way in. Because both J'ouvert and the parade take place in the early morning and daytime of the same public holiday, visitors normally plan the whole Labor Day weekend rather than a single day.
