Barbados Crop Over Videos
Crop Over is the Barbadian summer: fetes, soca and Grand Kadooment on the road.
Crop Over grew out of the end of the Barbadian sugar harvest and now runs through the summer, closing with Grand Kadooment when the bands leave the National Stadium and take the road. Between the opening and the finish there are fetes, cooler cruises, tuk band and Bajan soca everywhere on the island. This page collects the Crop Over footage we have, newest first.

What Barbados Carnival is
Crop Over is Barbados' carnival, and it is not a pre-Lenten festival at all — it began as a harvest celebration marking the end of the sugar cane crop, a tradition on the island since the 1780s. Revived in its modern form in the 1970s and run by the National Cultural Foundation, it now stretches across several weeks of the Barbadian summer and ends in early August. The season opens with the Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes and runs through calypso and soca tents, the Pic-O-De-Crop calypso competition, the Party Monarch and Soca Royale competitions, Bridgetown Market street fair and the Cohobblopot show. It closes with two days most visitors come for: Foreday Morning, the pre-dawn street jam in paint, mud and powder along the Spring Garden Highway area, and Grand Kadooment, the costumed parade of the bands from the National Stadium down to Spring Garden, where masqueraders leave the road and go into the sea. The music is Barbadian — bashment soca and calypso with its own sound, distinct from Trinidad's. For anyone searching "Crop Over dates", "Grand Kadooment" or "Barbados carnival", this is that festival.

Grand Kadooment is the costumed parade of the bands that closes Crop Over, held on the first Monday in August. Bands leave from the National Stadium and make their way to the Spring Garden Highway area, where the day continues as a street party and many masqueraders end up in the sea. The National Cultural Foundation publishes the competition rules, band entry requirements and each year's route and times.

Foreday Morning is Barbados' J'ouvert — a pre-dawn street jam where paint, mud and powder take over the road and thousands chip behind the trucks. It is held on the Saturday before Grand Kadooment, along the Mighty Grynner Highway and Spring Garden area in Saint Michael, and is organised through the National Cultural Foundation.

Crop Over comes from the sugar plantation, not from Lent. Barbados was one of the Caribbean's largest sugar producers, and the end of the annual cane harvest was marked with celebration from around the 1780s — decorated carts, music, dancing, masquerade and the crowning of the most productive cutters. The festival died out as the sugar industry declined in the twentieth century and was revived in 1974 as a national cultural festival, which is why its structure blends plantation-era harvest traditions with the calypso, soca and mas of the wider Caribbean. It is also why Crop Over falls in high summer and ends on the first Monday in August, rather than moving with Easter as Trinidad's does.
