What Junkanoo Carnival is

Junkanoo is the Bahamas' national street parade, and it is one of the oldest surviving festival traditions in the Caribbean. It is not a pre-Lenten carnival and not a summer mas festival: the two major parades are held in the small hours of Boxing Day, 26 December, and New Year's Day, 1 January, with the biggest staged on Bay Street in downtown Nassau. Junkanoo groups — large, highly organised and fiercely competitive — spend much of the year building costumes from crêpe paper, cardboard and wire, some of them enormous, and rehearsing brass and percussion. The parade moves to a rhythm made by goatskin drums, cowbells, whistles and horns, and groups are judged on costume, music and choreography, with results announced after the parade. The tradition also carries a summer form, Junkanoo Summer Festival events, and parades in the Family Islands beyond New Providence. For anyone searching "Junkanoo dates", "Bahamas Junkanoo parade", "Boxing Day Junkanoo" or "Bay Street Junkanoo", this is that festival — a Bahamian tradition with its own sound, calendar and rules rather than a version of Trinidad-style carnival.

When it happens

Junkanoo 2026 runs 26 December 2026 – 1 January 2027. Junkanoo does not move with Lent or with Easter. The two major parades fall on fixed dates each year: Boxing Day, 26 December, and New Year's Day, 1 January, both beginning in the hours after midnight and running past sunrise.

Parade

The main Junkanoo parades run through the small hours and into the morning on Boxing Day and New Year's Day, with the largest on Bay Street in downtown Nassau. Groups parade in order of entry and are judged on costume, music and performance; the national committee responsible for the parades publishes the order of entry and arrangements each season, and the Bahamas' official tourism site publishes parade information for visitors.

J'ouvert / Jouvay

The Bahamas does not hold a J'ouvert in the eastern Caribbean sense. Junkanoo itself is the pre-dawn event: participants take to the street in the hours after midnight, accompanied by whistles, cowbells, horns and goatskin drums, and the parade continues until well after sunrise. Visitors looking for the pre-dawn street experience should plan for the Boxing Day and New Year's Day parades themselves rather than a separate paint or mud jam.

Fêtes and festival week

Around the two main parades there are rush-outs, group showcases and community events through the Christmas season, and Junkanoo-themed events are also staged in the summer months and in the Family Islands. The Bahamas' official tourism site publishes the events calendar covering these.

Culture and history

Junkanoo's roots reach back to the days of slavery in the Bahamas, when enslaved people were given a short break around Christmas and used it for masquerade, drumming and dance, in a tradition connected to similar West African and Caribbean masking practices. It survived periods of official disapproval and restriction, and in the twentieth century developed into the organised, judged competition seen today, with large groups, sponsored costumes and year-round preparation. The materials are distinctive: fringed crêpe paper pasted over cardboard and wire frames, built at a scale that can require several people to carry a single costume. The music, driven by goatskin drums, cowbells, whistles, brass and bugles, is unmistakably Bahamian and quite unlike soca-led carnivals elsewhere in the region.

Getting there

The largest parades are in Nassau on New Providence, reached through Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS), with bleacher seating on Bay Street sold for the main parades and much of the route standing-only. Because the parades run through the night into the morning of public holidays, accommodation in and around downtown Nassau is booked early for the Christmas and New Year period.
